How to Play FlatOut 2 with Splitscreen Multiplayer on PC

FlatOut 2 is a racing game that features destructible environments and ragdoll physics. It was released in 2006 for Windows, PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The game supports up to eight players online, but it does not have a native splitscreen mode for local multiplayer. However, thanks to a mod created by MorMund, you can now play FlatOut 2 with up to four players on the same PC using splitscreen.

In this article, we will show you how to download and install the mod, how to configure the settings and controllers, and how to start a splitscreen session. We will also provide some troubleshooting tips in case you encounter any problems.

Download and Install the Mod

The first step is to download the mod from this GitHub page. You will need a zip file called FO2-Splitscreen.zip. Extract all the files into your FlatOut 2 game folder, which is usually located at C:\Program Files\FlatOut2\. If you have a fresh installation of the game, you should launch it once normally by running FlatOut2.exe.

Next, you need to install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2, which is required for the mod to work. You can download it from this link. Follow the instructions to install it on your PC.

Configure the Settings and Controllers

In the Advanced tab, you can change some settings manually by editing Splitscreen_Settings.xml. However, this is not recommended unless you know what you are doing. You can also start the mod without opening the launcher by using the command line argument -noConfig.

Start a Splitscreen Session

Once you have configured everything, click on Start Game. The game will open multiple times, once for each player. You will see each game window arranged on your screen according to your resolution settings.

All in-game setup can only be performed by using the keyboard and clicking on the window of the instance you are trying to setup. Go to Settings, Controller Options and select your controller. Then you can change your button bindings. These settings are usually saved between sessions.

Now you can start a multiplayer session by selecting Multiplayer -> LAN in the main menu and selecting Create Game with the host instance (the top left game). Then you can join with all other players by selecting Multiplayer -> LAN -> Join Game. Note that even though you are playing in LAN mode, it is currently not possible to join a splitscreen session from another computer in your network.
